Powder Coating – What, Why and How
Move aside anthracite grey, aluminium is all about the colour. Aluminium installations have come a long way since its comeback to the fabrication scene in the 1990s with improvements made to thermal efficiency, design and functionality.
One improvement was in the availability of colours for aluminium windows and doors, using powder coating for a high-quality, durable finish.
There’s vast amounts of information out there on the benefits of using aluminium in windows and doors fabrication, touching mainly on factors of design, durability and sustainability. However, a lot of these benefits can also be applied to powder coating, but what is powder coating and how does it work?
In short, powder coating is a free-flowing powder which, in dry form, is electrostatically coated and cured under heat causing it to form a kind of skin to the chosen material.
The coating technique is commonly used in metals as they are able to hold an electrostatic charge and can withstand the high temperatures used during the curing process. Powder coating has, for a long time, been the most popular finish to aluminium due to the number of benefits it brings to the metal.
Because powder coating does not have a liquid carrier, it can produce thicker coverage than conventional liquid coatings without running or sagging, and is available in a wide range of colours and gloss levels.
Visual appeal aside, this thick coating creates a robust finish which is highly thermal and UV and corrosion resistant, lasting for many years with minimal maintenance.
Compared to standard paint, powder coatings contain no solvents and releases little to no amount of volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere. Powder overspray can also be retrieved and reused making this coating process environmentally-friendly and at reduced waste. This fact, along with its energy-saving thermal properties and long-lasting life, makes powder coating a greener alternative to standard paint jobs.
Alutech’s plant is equipped with an automated horizontal powder coating line for aluminium and steel parts with automatic temperature adjustment and polymerization process control. Allowing for rapid colour change and an even and high quality coating.
